“Katie! Lauren! It’s time to go!” Fern called to her two daughters who were playing nearby.
She smiled as they raced to the wagon, scrambling to see who could get in first. Jug jumped up between them, enjoying the scratches and attention that he was being given.
Fern laughed. She couldn’t believe how much her girls had grown. It seemed like just yesterday they had been infants, tiny bundles that felt as if they’d fall out of her arms.
They were dressed in their Sunday best, and despite a few smudges they’d gathered in their play, Fern was happy with how nice they looked. It wasn’t every day that they got to go to a wedding.
“Are you all ready to go?” Charley asked, giving Fern a quick surprise kiss on her forehead.
Fern leaned into him for a moment and breathed a sigh of contentment.
“I do believe we are ready. Are you? Is it strange to have your brother getting married?”
Charley looked off towards the direction of Vincent’s farm.
“I do have to admit that it’s a little strange. I never thought of Vincent as a family man.
“People change. If the last few years have taught us anything, it would be that.” Fern adjusted the tie in her hair and pushed a few rebellious strands behind her ears.
“Don’t I know it? And another thing we’ve learned is, people have the ability to be changed by other people.”
Fern blushed as she recognized the compliment. Charley was talking about her. He often gave her little reminders of how their relationship started out, telling her how grateful he was for her presence in his life.
Fern didn’t need his reassuring words anymore to feel okay, but they were nice to hear.
“May I help you up my dear?” Charley offered Fern his hand, and Fern placed hers inside of it with a giggle.
Katie and Lauren watched with amused looks on their faces. They often joined in with their father’s games in making Fern feel special.
While they hadn’t expanded their family in the last couple of years, Fern often felt that they were already complete.
What more could she ask for besides a loving husband and two smart, beautiful daughters?
The ride to town wasn’t different from any other day, but it certainly felt like it was. The flowers seemed just a little bit brighter, and the sun seemed just a little bit warmer.
“It’s been a while since we’ve come out as a family,” Fern mused. They had been so busy with the harvest and preparing for Winter that the weeks seemed to have mingled into one another, leaving only a chunk of time in their memory.
“You’re right. We should get out a few more times before it gets cold.” Charley glanced up with a worried look at the sky.
Fern followed his gaze, but there was nothing to be worried about today. It was a beautiful fall day, and she was sure that nothing was going to change that.
Today was destined to be kind to them, if not for their sake then for Vincent’s.
They pulled up to the church in what seemed like no time at all. It was still the simple white building that they visited every week, but it seemed different somehow. Fern was sure that it had something to do with the decorations, but the air felt special besides.
There were wildflowers of every size, shape, and color, arranged in bouquets outside. There were lengths of airy cloth tied in between the bouquets.
People were beginning to arrive, all of them dressed in their very best, there to see Vincent off to the beginning of his new life.
“There you all are! How are my favorite nieces?” Vincent asked in a boisterous happy voice as he spotted them.
“We’re your only nieces!” Katie protested with a laugh as he gave her and her sister a hug.
“I know, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be my favorite nieces.” Vincent had a mischievous glint in his eyes that made both Fern and Charley giggle.
“I’m going to go and check on your bride,” Fern said mysteriously.
She had known Vincent’s fiancée for over two months now. She was certainly a likable girl, and Fern had become fast friends with her from the instant they’d met.
In many ways, she reminded Fern of herself. She was young and unsure and looking for someone to care for her despite her flaws, all things that Fern hadn’t believed in once upon a time but had come to find with Charley.
“Tell her hello for me. Her sisters wouldn’t let me near her.” Vincent rolled his eyes with a fake annoyed expression on his face.
“You know the tradition, you should know better than to even try to see her,” Fern scolded.
She took off at a brisk pace towards the little church house. She knocked on the door of the room in the back, and as soon as the woman behind it realized that it wasn’t Vincent, she let her in.
Fern rushed over to Leah.
“She looks absolutely marvelous, doesn’t she?” Loraine gushed by her side.
“She absolutely does. Vincent is a lucky man.” Fern helped smooth out a missed wrinkle on the skirt of the long white dress.
Seeing Leah and her preparations for this big decision reminded Fern of the day she herself had agreed to marry Charley.
She hadn’t had a white dress or any flowers, but none of that mattered now; what mattered was what they had together that one couldn’t see.
“I think they’re about ready for you,” Loraine said rushing back from the doorway.
“Are you ready to go out there?” Loraine asked, waiting for the nervous bride to reply.
“I’m ready,” Leah said softly.
“Of course, you are. You’ll see that this is only the beginning,” Fern whispered as Leah stepped out the door.
The young woman was about to start an amazing journey that Fern hoped she could witness.
—*—
Vincent could practically hear his heart beating out of his chest. He hoped that everything went smoothly. They had spent the last two months planning everything, inviting people, preparing Leah’s dress, decorating the church.
It seemed it had been one thing after another, and now that the day was finally here, Vincent almost wished that he could go back to being busy.
He hadn’t really thought he would find a girl to get married to, and then Leah had moved to town.
She had caught his eye from the moment her family had stepped out of the stagecoach, and he hadn’t been able to take his eyes off of her since.
The preacher’s wife began to play the song on the piano, and Vincent spotted his nieces walking down the aisle carrying little baskets of flowers, scattering them on the floor around them.
Their little blue dresses accented their perfect round faces in a beautiful way, bringing out their innocence and happiness.
He loved his nieces, and he loved that he’d been able to be a part in their lives. It had been something that he’d never expected he’d have, and then that day that Charley had come to yell at him had changed everything.
They’d slowly reestablished their family. Yes, there were many new members, but they had become as close-knit as he, Aria, and Charley had been so long ago.
Vincent couldn’t keep the huge grin off his face as he finally spotted Leah. He figured she must be as excited as he was since she looked as if she couldn’t possibly smile any bigger.
She was dressed in the most beautiful dress he’d ever seen, and her hair was woven with flowers that cascaded around her shoulders.
Her eyes sparkled with something that was even more beautiful than the rest, love for him. Vincent knew at that moment he would do anything for Leah. She was his world, and he could tell that he was hers.
He had already changed one of the biggest things in his life that he’d never been able to do before, his drinking habits. He could hardly remember the last time he had been down to the saloon, and when he did go, it was for a drink with Charley, Tom, and Kent.
The more he had fallen in love with Leah, the more he’d realized that everything else distracting him from moving forward needed to go.
“You are the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen,” Vincent whispered as Leah finally reached him at the altar.
They stared into each other’s eyes as the preacher went on with the ceremony. Vincent was so distracted he could hardly hear the preacher. He wasn’t sure what he said or what she said, but the next thing he knew, he was leaning in to give Leah a kiss that would seal them together forever.
They held hands and walked through the crowd of people who took the opportunity to throw rice over them.
Vincent found this particular tradition slightly annoying, but Leah had insisted that it was okay, and the people seemed to enjoy it.
Fern had arranged for a potluck picnic, and everyone seemed to have brought three times the food necessary. It looked like every woman in the county had spent an entire day baking every dish they knew how to make. The aromas were heavenly.
“Congratulations brother! I’m glad I could be here for this moment.” Charley’s words brought Vincent’s attention off of his new wife who had gone to talk with Fern and some of the women.
“I wouldn’t have had it any other way.” Vincent accepted a half-hug from his brother, and then they stood awkwardly for a moment, unsure of what to say to each other.
“I’ve been thinking; it’s been too long since we’ve talked about our parents’ land.”
“You don’t have to talk about it. Like I said before, it’s not really important. If you’d like, it can stay there vacant for the next ten years. Family is what is most important.” Vincent stuffed his hands into his pockets and looked over at Fern and his wife once more.
Katie and Lauren had picked some yellow flowers and were presenting them proudly, basking in the compliments they received.
“I know that you’ve said that, and I appreciate it, but I’ve decided that you were right years ago. It shouldn’t just go to waste, holding us in the past. We should do something with it.”
“Really?” Vincent couldn’t help feeling doubt. He knew how important his parents’ land was for Charley, and he didn’t want to be the one pushing him to change it.
“What did you have in mind?” He was curious to know what it was that had inspired Charley to change his viewpoint on the topic. The truth was Vincent hadn’t brought the topic up since the day they had reconciled, and he wasn’t sure that it was a good idea to bring it up now, but Charley seemed okay with it so far, so he would give it a chance, and hope that it went well.
“I was thinking we could expand our ranches into it, make some extra pasture out there and get more shipments of cows. The dairy products would be purchased in town I’m sure; it seems more and more people move here every day.”
Vincent nodded as he imagined the idea. The truth was it was much better than anything he’d thought of doing with the land.
“The cattle business has been getting larger every month. We could capitalize on that. One day, it’s not going to be as lucrative as it is now.We might as well get in while it’s good.” Charley grinned and raised his eyebrows.
“We could also plant some crops in the back fields, to feed the cattle,” Vincent mused aloud. “Maybe some corn and oats, a few soybeans… We could sell any excess and make a little profit on the side,” he continued dreamily.
He didn’t want to get his hopes up too high, but the more he heard the idea, and the more they talked about it, the more he could already see it taking shape in his mind.
“We should get together one of these days and really plan it out. Of course, you should take your time with your new bride first,” Charley said with a wink.
Charley stepped back and gestured to where Leah was standing. Fern and the girls had gone on to say hello to some other people, and Vincent’s bride had a sort of lost look on her face.
“I should go to her, but Charley, thank you. It means a lot that you want to move forward on the property with me,” Vincent said as he moved a little towards Leah.
“You’re my brother, Vincent, and while I seemed to have forgotten that for several years, I will never forget again.”
“Rest assured neither will I, Charley. Neither will I.”
Vincent smiled as he went to join his new wife, the new member of his constantly growing family.
Today had been a huge step forward for all of them.
—*—
Charley watched as Vincent embraced Leah, and they said something to each other and laughed softly.
For a moment, he wished that he could have started his married life this way, but then again, the way he had started it had been perfect for his family. In the end, everything had turned out good. In fact, everything had turned out so much better than he had expected.
He had realized Vincent’s hesitance at the mention of his parents’ land, but he was sure. He and Fern had talked about it, and they were both certain that it was the right time to move in that direction for their family.
Charley remembered the time when Fern didn’t even know who his family was or what had happened between them. Now she was the one he went to when he needed to talk about them or something concerning them.
Vincent had become an integral part of their lives, and it was something that Charley was thankful to Fern for every day of his life.
He knew that if it hadn’t been for her and the change she had brought with her, he never would have reconciled with his brother.
Charley’s eyes landed on his two daughters who were headed his way, their mother close behind. They were a beautiful blessing that he never would have imagined possible.
“Enjoying the wedding?” Tom asked as he approached and followed Charley’s gaze.
Fern had stopped to talk to a woman from town, and the girls had paused, waiting for her to finish.
“It’s crazy, isn’t it? How every disaster that we went through led us to this moment?” Charley shook his head slightly as he mused over this.
“You know, in all fairness, you have me to thank,” Tom said, turning to Charley with a serious look on his face.
“How do you figure that?” Charley asked with a laugh.
“If I had never made you write that mail order bride ad, Fern never would have married you, and we all know what kind of man you would be without Fern.”
Tom laughed and ducked as Charley playfully tried to knock him over the head. He wasn’t about to admit it, but Tom was right–he had set this entire thing into motion.
Charley thought of the scars that had kept him so secluded this entire time. He hardly noticed them anymore. There were times when someone still whispered, pointed, or asked him, but for some reason, it didn’t bother him like it used to.
Maybe it was because the one person who mattered most, loved him along with his scars in every form and sense, and that made him love himself.
“What are the two of you discussing?” Fern asked as she finally made it over to them. “There are so many people here. It seems everywhere I turn there’s someone I haven’t said hello to in weeks.” Fern tucked a strand of hair back into place, and Charley helped her with a strand that she’d missed. It seemed her hair was always out of place, no matter what she did.
“We’re not discussing much; just how I pretty much single-handedly put the two of you together and changed your lives for the better,” Tom boasted as he laughed at his own joke and Fern and Charley joined in. Their daughters glanced between the laughing adults with puzzled looks on their faces before running off to join their friends.
“Look at them go. I suppose I had a hand in helping them exist too.” Tom gave Charley a little wink, and this time, Charley’s fist made contact with Tom’s shoulder, albeit gently.
Tom grinned and pretended it hurt.
“I actually wanted to tell you all that I may be having a wedding of my own soon,” Tom revealed, wiggling his eyebrows mischievously. Tom had a mysterious air about him that made Charley instantly curious.
“Is that so? Enlighten us on what kind of a woman would like to marry an old jokester like you?” Charley laughed good-naturedly, and this time it was his turn to duck from a playful blow.
“Actually, I wrote an ad, and I may have gotten a few responses,” he confessed, handing a copy of the latest newspaper to Charley. Tom looked suddenly embarrassed, and Charley felt bad for teasing him.
Charley read the ad and let out a loud guffaw, clapping Tom on the back. “Looks like you might make a good poet someday! I hope it turns out as well for you as it did for me,” Charley said, putting out his hand to call a truce.
Tom shook it enthusiastically with a smile and took back the paper proudly. “As do I, Charley, as do I.”
Charley wrapped an arm around Fern, and they watched Tom walk away.
“Let’s find a place to have some lunch. I’ll get the blanket from the wagon,” Charlie offered.
“That sounds like a good idea. I’ll get the girls and meet you under the trees over there. I think Vincent wanted us to sit near them.” Fern stood on her tiptoes and gave him a kiss before mingling into the crowd searching for their daughters.
Charley laughed. Dealing with twins had been a challenge for both of them; there was always plenty of work and mischief to be dealt with, but he would have it no other way.

Thank you thank you for a wonderful book. I really enjoyed the story about Fern your writing made her a strong and caring woman she opened up her heart and found a man that she could
love and have a family just beautiful!!!
Thank you so much for your comment, Jackie! So glad you enjoyed my book!😁
Loved the book, loved the ending, and really loved the extended epilogue. I always wonder how things are going after the book ending. Thank you for a unique end!
You’re so kind, Teresa! Thank you so much for your kind words and support! 🙂
Loved the book! Enjoyed how the characters fit into the story. There always lessons to be learned in every story written and this is no exception. Thank you
Every story I read just seems to get better and better. I really enjoyed this one and found it hard to put down, even to get dinner made at a decent time tonight! I’m thankful my husband is so understanding. I only found one small blooper … After the barn burned you had Charlie go to the barn before the new barn raising. Other than that the story and extended ending were great!
I loved your book! You have such a knack for capturing the way a person feels about themself after being badly scarred and how they dread the reaction of others. Charlie suffered so much both physically and mentally and became so withdrawn. Thank goodness Fern proved to be strong and scared enough to stay so their relationship could develop into love! This was truly a wonderful book. 😀
A good story and better the second time around
I loved the book and the epilogue. The story was interesting and exciting. Well written. Felt like I could be neighbors.
What a wonderful story. I started the book and read all day. Could not put it down. I love the extra that Lorelei Brogan puts at the end of her stories.
A beautiful and tender story weaving heartache, insecurities, intrigue and suspense with hope, love and forgiveness into a wonderful ending of great happiness. Thank you for an enjoyable reading experience.

I can always imagine the town’s, homes, and ranches in your stories. I get transported and that makes for the best read. Thank you.

It is great when one of your favorite Author comes out like this story which is great but the extended just puts the finishing touches to the story. Thank you again for a delightful story and happy ending!
So glad you enjoyed the story!
Another wonderful story about love. It doesn’t matter if we have scars on the inside or the outside they hurt just the same. I like how you let Ferns inner scars help Charlie heal from his outer scars.
So glad you enjoyed the story!
A very wonderful story loved reading
Thank you!
As always, your stories are the best!! I love how they all have that distinct CLEAN love that you are master at deliverance, I truly get lost in your beautiful words, I get the feeling, that “yeah! Great story! Loved the book all the way thru. Good Christian love story.
Thank you!
Enjoyed the book immensely for several reasons: characters with human flaws, facing their own demons, overcoming many adversities, and finding true happiness in the end. Hope others enjoy it as much as I did.
Love, you books good clean love stories. Keep them coming!
I was totally captivated after the first page! It was heart wrenching from the get go. The story was such a page-turner that I started it in the evening and didn’t put it down until I finished the book and epilogue to finally go to sleep. Lorilei, this is the first story I read of yours and will be looking forward to reading more! Thank you for a great story.
Thanks Orilla! I hope you enjoying my other stories too!
